The work presented in this chapter lies within Learner modeling in an adaptive ed‐ ucational system construed as a computational modeling of the learner. All actions of the learner in a learning situation on an adaptive hypermedia systems are not limited to valid or invalid actions (true and false), but they are a set of actions that characterize the learning path of his formation. Thus, we can...

This document presents an eeort towards nding a common understanding on how user and learner modeling systems, if seen as agents, can communicate with the applications. The fundamental characteristics of the communication between application agents (Apps) and user or learner modeling systems (ULMSs) are examined in order to draw some conclusions on what features should be considered within such...

This paper describes an ontology-based intelligent authoring tool. We focus on how task ontology helps the construction of learner modeling and teaching strategy modeling. Our goal is to provide the intelligent training system authors with a friendly and helpful guideline using task ontology, which enables them to build more powerful and flexible intelligent training systems. In the learner mod...

This paper describes the development and empirical testing of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) with two emerging methodologies: (1) a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) for representing the learner model and (2) inquiry modeling, which informs the learner model with questions learners ask during instruction. POMDPs have been successfully applied to non-ITS domains but, unt...

We present a modeling framework that supports the engineering of early requirements specifications for design of learner centric dynamic Learning Management System. The framework is based on i* modeling tool and Means End Analysis, that adopts primitive concepts for modeling early requirements (such as actor, goal, and strategic dependency). We show how pedagogical and computational requirement...

The recently launched European Integrated Project iClass is developing a learning system that takes into account the multi-cultural and multilingual characteristics of its member countries in pre-university education. For adapting the presentation of learning objects to the learners’ needs, the iClass system will keep track of the students’ domain knowledge. The learner modeling system consists...

We describe a lifelong learner modeling project that focuses on the use of written and behavioral data to detect patterns of learning over time. Related work in essay analysis and machine learning is discussed. Although primarily focused on isolated learning experiences, we argue there is promise for scaling these techniques up to the lifelong learner modeling problem.
